Donkeys were small four-footed mammals that were used in expeditions and caravans in the Sahara to carry goods and travellers.

Donkeys were sometimes used by expeditions seeking ruins in Egypt and merchants in Cairo. Donkeys could lift human riders and heavy loads: for this reason, Dr Allen Chamberlain rode one such donkey on the journey to Hamunaptra.
