On April 8, 2009 the Nova Scotia New Democratic Party declared that Zann would be the party's entrant in the electoral district of Truro-Bible Hill. On that very day, an employee of the Liberal Party produced a topless photo of Zann to the media from her role in The L Word. On June 9, 2009, Zann won the seat in the general election.
