"The Dark Medjai" is the sixteenth episode of Season Two of The Mummy: The Animated Series.
Plot summary[]
At a dreary prison on an island, two Medjai discuss their sole prisoner, the "Dark Medjai" Nizam Toth. Despite the warnings of the elder against the dangerous captive, the younger Medjai is unimpressed with the elderly Toth. Unfortunately, he plays right into Toth's hands, with Toth setting a pack of rats on the younger Medjai to enable him to escape from his cell. The older Medjai attempts to stop him, but despite his apparent age Toth easily overcomes him. Toth then eagerly anticipates a reckoning with his old foe, Ardeth Bay, before leaping into the sea.
In Egypt, Alex is dropped off at the Medjai Academy by his family, and is introduced to his new classmates by Ardeth. Unfortunately, several of the students, led by Fadil, seem to take an instant dislike to Alex. From playing games to training to doing chores, they set out to make his life difficult, the only exception being one who introduces himself to Alex as Yanit. Meanwhile, Nizam Toth returns to his lair, and enacts a magical ritual that restores him to a more youthful age before awakening two pets that resemble undead jackals.
Fed up with Fadil's antagonism, Alex confronts him, only for Fadil to comment that the Manacle of Osiris is the only reason Alex is at the academy, while the others are of Medjai blood. However, their argument is interrupted when Nizam Toth arrives and attacks, caring nothing for the youth and innocence of the students. Alex attempts to advise the others to follow Ardeth's council and work together, but Fadil leads most of the others in a futile charge against their adversaries. Ardeth then appears to confront Toth, but is overpowered by the Dark Medjai and his pets, who transform into humanoid forms.
The academy is set on fire during the conflict, and Toth knocks Ardeth unconscious with a magical scarab. Alex attempts to rescue his friend and teacher using the Manacle, but ends up pulling flaming debris towards himself and the others until Yanit pulls him away. He is adamant about helping to save Ardeth despite Fadil's scorn, and the students set off on horseback to follow the Dark Medjai. Along the way, Alex questions Yanit's kindness towards him, and Yanit responds that, like Alex, he is different from the other students.
Back at Toth's lair, Toth awakens his captive and demands that Ardeth tell him the location of the Medallion of the Medjai, an artifact with the power to control the Underworld. Ardeth refuses, and Toth summons a pair of magical cobra who shed their skins as they slither up Ardeth's body, slowly covering him in a smothering layer that will eventually kill him. The students arrive at the lair, and Alex realizes-correctly-that Toth has deliberately left a trail for them to follow. Fadil ignores his caution, and the group enters the lair; however, after they come to two corridors that split off from each other, Alex feels strongly that they have followed the wrong one.
Yanit agrees to accompany Alex down the other corridor, to the derision of Fadil, but Alex's instincts are proven correct when stone walls slam down to trap all of the Medjai students but Alex and Yanit. A grate in the roof of the new room begins pouring sand down on the trapped Medjai, and Yanit determines by looking through a crack in one wall that it will be filled in about fifteen minutes. Alex and Yanit set off to find Ardeth so he can help them rescue the others, though Fadil accuses Alex of cowardice and attempts to save himself and the others, though with no success. Alex and Yanit run into Toth's pets, and are able to trick them into following their dog-like instincts and running after a pair of sticks.
Next, the pair come to a chasm that can only be crossed using a bridge that is marked with the inscription "No man may reach the other side alive." When Alex attempts to do so, swinging blades bar his path; however, after double-checking the translation, Yanit crosses the bridge without consequence. Alex is baffled, but Yanit then removes "his" head-covering to reveal that he is, in fact, no man, but a girl. She then jams the mechanism that controls the blades, allowing Alex to follow her across the bridge safely. Yanit explains that she was the only child of a Medjai, and became determined to follow in her father's footsteps when he died, but was forced to disguise herself due to traditions forbidding women from becoming Medjai.
After discovering one of Toth's periscopes, which he uses to keep watch on the confines of his lair, Alex and Yanit-who has replaced her head-covering-are able to locate the chamber where he's holding Ardeth. The two young Medjai, working together, are able to send Toth's cobras flying into a chasm with magma at its bottom. They then succeed in knocking Toth himself into the chasm, though he manages to cling to a ledge. Ardeth, freed from his chains, removes the legs from the scarab Toth used against him before, allowing the artifact to be used to read minds. With it, Ardeth is able to learn how to rescue the other students; however, Toth drops into the chasm, vowing that the Medjai have not seen the last of him.
Ardeth, Alex, and Yanit manage to free the other students, and Fadil apologizes to Alex for his earlier mistreatment. The Medjai then leave Toth's lair, and Ardeth informs Alex that Yanit told him everything about what happened. When Alex realizes that this means Ardeth knows Yanit's secret, he is briefly worried, but Ardeth feels that their changing world means some of their traditions must change as well. Relieved that Yanit is free to pursue the path of a Medjai, Alex questions whether Ardeth will still make the students get up at 4:30 in the morning for jumping jack drills. Ardeth responds dryly "I didn't say all traditions."
