Yanit (voiced by Jeannie Elias) is a teenage girl and supporting character in The Mummy: Secrets of the Medjai season two.
Biography[]
The daughter and granddaughter of Medjai, Yanit became determined to follow in her forebears' footsteps after her father died. Because Medjai tradition forbade women from joining the order, Yanit disguised herself as a boy, keeping her long hair concealed under a covering. When Alex O'Connell arrived at the Medjai academy, Yanit was the only student who didn't ostracize him based on the (false) assumption that he was not of Medjai descent. Later, when Nizam Toth attacked the academy, Yanit was the only student to heed Alex's counsel that they should work together, and the two fought against Toth's monstrous pets. Later, when Alex's attempt to use the Manacle of Osiris to rescue a kidnapped Ardeth Bay resulted in fiery debris being pulled towards him and the other students, Yanit convinced him to abandon the effort and flee the burning academy.
Despite the hostility of their peer Fadil and his friends, Yanit and Alex accompanied the others on a mission to rescue Ardeth. When Alex questioned Yanit's friendliness towards him, Yanit responded simply that they were "both outsiders"; when Alex balked at this, saying she was like the other young Medjai, Yanit retorted "I am not like them." The party soon located Toth's lair, but Alex soon realized that the Dark Medjai had deliberately left a trail for them. When he second-guessed a choice of two corridors, Yanit supported him and agreed not to follow the one Fadil had chosen. Fadil's mockery was short-lived, as stone walls slammed down and trapped all the students but Yanit and Alex in a room that began filling up with sand.
Yanit, demonstrating surprising skill at math, determined after peering through a crack in one of the walls that they had fifteen minutes before their classmates' prison would be entirely filled. Unable to rescue them alone, she and Alex set out to find and rescue Ardeth. They soon came to a bridge over a chasm, with one end bearing the inscription "No man may reach the other side alive." Alex's attempt to cross demonstrated that pendulum blades hung ready to kill any man attempting to pass; however, Yanit recognized a loophole in the warning. She crossed the bridge easily, the blades failing to react to her presence, and Yanit revealed her secret to a confused Alex.
Jamming the pendulum mechanisms so that Alex could cross, Yanit hid her hair again while Alex discovered a periscope used by Toth to spy on his intruders. Using it, they were able to locate the room where he was holding Ardeth, and between them the two overcame the Dark Medjai and freed Ardeth. With his help, they were then able to rescue the other students, after which the entire group fled Toth's lair. Yanit then confessed everything to Ardeth, who realized the truth about her based on understanding the nature of the bridge trap. Fortunately, the open-minded Medjai decided that it was time for at least some Medjai traditions to change, and he agreed to allow Yanit to continue training to become a Medjai.
